The 21st Century Educated Person
In order to be a contributing and productive member of our multicultural, “thinking” society of the 21st century, an educated person must possess skills in literacy, mathematics, and communication. One also needs to have a well-developed self-concept, and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups. A strong foundation in essential skills will enable one to apply content knowledge to higher order processes.
Previously, education addressed the needs of the “Industrial Age” which was characterized by teaching and learning prescribed sets of facts, and of gathering the necessary information to be productive in adulthood. Currently, in the “Information Age,” facts, figures, and information of all types are readily available. Today’s educated person needs to discern what information is needed for a given situation, determine where to get it, and know what to do with it.
Furthermore, as a member of a multicultural society, a person must be committed to understanding, respecting, and promoting acceptance of the differences and similarities of individuals and other cultures. One must be able to solve problems through collaboration and communication, using skills that allow them to adapt to changing environments and forces. At Santa Monica Blvd. Community Charter School, it is our charge to inspire such individuals.
